What is a checking account, and what can I use it for?
A checking account is a deposit account designed for everyday money management. You can use it to write checks, make debit card purchases, receive direct deposits, pay bills, access cash, and manage day-to-day spending. Patterson State Bank offers checking options with convenient services such as unlimited check writing, online and mobile banking, bill pay, Zelle, and mobile deposit.
How do I open a checking account?
You can open a checking account by visiting any Patterson State Bank branch or contacting the bank for help choosing and opening the right account. Patterson State Bank has banking locations in Patterson, Morgan City, and Berwick. We encourage customers to call or find a location to get started.
What do I need to open a checking account?
To open a checking account, be prepared to provide picture identification such as a state ID, driver’s license or US issued passport. Depending on the account type, you may also need to make an opening deposit. For example, the Money Market account requires $2,500 to open but a Free Personal Checking has no minimum to open.
Which checking account is right for me?
The right checking account depends on how you want to bank. Our Free Personal Checking is a good fit if you want no monthly maintenance fee, no minimum balance, and unlimited check writing. We offer our Patterson Club 50 checking account for customers aged 50 and over, and this account will pay interest on the entire balance. Our Money Market account may be a better fit if you want to earn interest at a competitive rate while still having limited check-writing access.
Can I open a joint checking account?
Yes. A joint checking account can typically be opened with another person, such as a spouse, family member, or trusted co-owner. Each applicant should be prepared to provide identification and required account-opening information.
How do I switch my checking account to Patterson State Bank?

Opening times can vary depending on the account type and the information provided. In most cases, a personal checking account can be opened during a branch visit once the required information and any required opening deposit are provided.
Should I choose a Money Market account or a Free Personal Checking account?
Choose a Free Personal Checking account if you mainly need everyday access, unlimited check writing, and simple spending tools. Choose a Money Market account if you want to earn interest at a competitive rate on your balance while still having limited check-writing access. Patterson State Bank’s Money Market account requires $2,500 to open, a $2,500 minimum balance to avoid a $15 monthly maintenance fee, and includes three checks per statement cycle at no charge. There is a 15.00 charge per item in excess of three checks or six preauthorized transactions per statement cycle.
How do I set up direct deposit for my checking account?
To set up direct deposit, provide your employer or benefits provider with your Patterson State Bank account number and the bank’s routing information. If you need help locating the correct information or completing a direct deposit form, contact Patterson State Bank or visit a branch.
