Each Labor Day weekend, the sights, sounds, and flavors of south Louisiana come alive in Morgan City as friends, families, and neighbors gather for the Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival. Now celebrating its 91st year, the festival is more than a longstanding local event. It is a celebration of the people, industries, traditions, and community spirit that have helped shape this special part of south Louisiana.

With roots stretching back to 1936, the festival has grown alongside the area while remaining connected to the heritage of the region. What began as a celebration centered around the local seafood industry evolved over the years to recognize the petroleum industry as well. Today, the festival honors these two industries that have played an important role in the history and economy of our area.

For those who live here, the festival holds a special kind of meaning. For generations, it has been part of the memories and experiences that make this area so special. It is seeing familiar faces along the parade route, enjoying favorite foods, listening to live music, visiting with neighbors, and introducing younger generations to a celebration that has been shared for decades. It is also an opportunity to recognize the hardworking people who have helped build and sustain our communities.

For decades, the waters and wetlands surrounding Morgan City have supported people whose livelihoods are connected to the seafood industry. The petroleum industry has also become an important part of the region’s story, providing opportunities for local families and businesses and contributing to the economy of the area.
